Everyone please take note.
The 8 weeks training course is just the vocational pathway into the ambulance service. They are then still trainees for another 3 years or so before they are qualified to be a Paramedic. This vocational pathway in Australia is starting to get phased out. You now have to do a three-year Bachelor's degree (which includes multiple placements with the ambulance service) and a one year graduate placement with the ambulance service before you can be called a Paramedic.Interesting. In Canada the training at least in Ontario is two to four years. 8 weeks! Wow they really get thrown out there early. My son's doing a four year program right now with an eye to later being a PA. Two things I worry about with this career choice are back injuries and PTSD. This IS a noble career and I think EMS services should be paid a lot more as many of them cannot work in this career to retirement due to the physical and psychological demands of this job.

Episode summary
Probationary Constable Cristina Cidade is a keen kickboxer – skills she's hoping will help keep her safe on the beat in Sydney. Called to a violent arrest, she's confronted with a suspect who's running from police – and does not want to be caught.
Its better than him being paralysed. ALWAYS stabilise the head. If he starts to no breathe because of blocked airway they can always intubate. THe paramedics are trained for this job just like doctors are trained so stop being biased

Generally its a 3-year uni course to be a para in Australia, however NSW does have a 'crash course' kinda thing (which is what this series follows) where they spend 8 weeks in the classroom with intensive training on all the basics they will need, then they spend the next 3 years on an ambulance with a senior paramedic who will help train them. I would also assume they have modules and training to complete while they do it. Its like the 3yr uni course, but in an ambulance instead of a classroomUh, look I really don't know, but off the top of my head there are roughly 14 or so drugs that can be administered by NSW paramedics, including glycerine, atropine, midazolam, epinephrine, morphine, and a few others. (Obviously methoxyflourane would also be on that list, come to think of it)... but I really don't know, and am simply going off memory from years ago, so I am probably wrong. I imagine dexamethasone would be on that list too, come to think of it... but I have no real idea.

Episode summary
Probationary Constable Chris Swadling spends a shift dealing with some of Sydney's more challenging residents. From attending a mental-health incident in Hyde Park, to a woman hearing 'voices' outside her flat and a confrontation at Central Station, he gets a no-holds- barred introduction to the reality of day to day policing. Country girl Emma Byrne also gets a shock introduction to life in Kings Cross, when her team are confronted with a bleeding woman overdosing in an alley way. Meanwhile at college, the student recruits are getting a reality check of their own. Anthony Toomey gets his first taste of dealing with a mentally ill person and Dean Engert is asked to deliver the message that every parent fears – a death knock. And for one student recruit, their policing career comes to an abrupt end.

Thanks for uploading! It is very important to find a system of dealing with calls/shouts. The crew has EXCELLENT bedside manner. I was disappointed that the trainee was not doing a S.A.M.P.L.E. history * while they are moving him around *. S symptoms A allergies M medications P past medical history L last meal/drink / Last meds E events leading-up to this Everything seems on-par or better than some major cities in the USA! CLEAN, NEW, GEAR! Maybe the show will film some problems too.In that particular case, the patient most likely would have been deemed time critical and needed to be transported as soon as, so trying to extricate him would have meant using a device called a KED (or a NIEJ), which basically is like a 'jacket' that wraps around the patient and takes a while to apply. So by doing a 'supine immobilization', it just allows the crews to bypass the NIEJ jacket and get the patient to hospital sooner :] Hope this helps :]

Episode summary
In Sydney, two Probationary Constables get their first taste of what it's like policing Sydney's biggest event of the year: Mardi Gras. A teeming mass of 300,000 partygoers converge in Sydney's city to celebrate.I'm currently studying paramedicine and you might be pleased to hear that as part of the course there is a semester long unit about mental health problems & disorders. As far as I'm aware all student paramedics in Australia undergo training in that subject.

The other issue is, Vol EMT's are everywhere, Paramedics aren't on every ambulance they're few and far between, In Oz we run staff paramedics on every ambulance, In America they're mainly volunteers, they start as drivers then EMT-B, EMT-I, EMT, Paramedic, so they don't have the experience or skill set sometimes even the general people skills to deal with every patient individually, Australia healthcare system is hundreds of times better, i'm saying that first hand from both sides!i completely agree. paramedics, the police etc should be taught about different mental health conditions. i have recovered from BPD and hate the way paramedics get angry so quickly. i have never taken an overdose for want of LOVE and AFFECTION, OR ATTENTION. everyone it seems, particularly those who put on a uniform, do no research but are happy to play amateur psychiatrist. that poor young man did not ask for his childhood abuse to be broadcast, and who would be normal after that.

Episode summary
Session one comes to an end for the student recruits at Goulburn who are told that they are now at the half way mark on the journey to becoming a police officer. The recruits nervously embark on a two-week field placement working alongside officers on the beat.Yes, me neither. I am a Paramedic in Australia as well but I operate in a different state. To my understanding to become a Paramedic in New South Wales (the state in which this is filmed) is only a 8 week course with a few years on road to become fully qualified. Whereas down here in Victoria, I had to do a 3 year University Degree and another year on road training. So as you can see, it's a pretty different system and we can do a lot more in Victoria than they can in New South Wales

an my another question is, how long you have to study in australia to be a paramedic? in poland is 3 years licency, and then you can go to work and also learn more for another 2 year and become a magister. we have to learn biochemy, farmakology, interna, basic chirurgy, lanquage of deaf people and the rest stuffs like trauma, algoritms and rest . we can intubate, deliver a child,  give a 28 medications (rest medications after consulting with a doctor or from his order), electricshocks, doing ecg, spo2, glucometer, caniula, bp mesure bla bla bla and also urinary cathetherization, conicothomy (conicopunction? something like tracheostomy but with a big needle and without scalpel), and we can also putting some tubes into the patients stomach and needles in his chest -oedma :)  (sorry but i don' know how you called this), clean patients bronchi on intensive care unit, taking blood samples but we cannot give a blood, this especially nurses can do with directed specialization, but we can work on a hospital in a rescue unit, intensive care unit, we can assist with surgerys, and in some hospitals work like usual nurse (becouse is less). also we was have a 2 years shools, with 7 moths of practise in a hospitals and ambulances and also some with fire brigade, but now theyre just gone.

A large number of ambulance call outs are to motor vehicle accidents. So for a trainee paramedic, learning how to extract an injured passenger out of a wreck is critical. In Richmond, former IT programmer Evan heads towards his first car crash.65 km's down the road in Sydney's Kings Cross jungle the results of a drunken brawl put Rebecca, a mother of three, to the test. It's the first time she's been to the red light district and already she has blood on her hands - literally. However, for rookie John his day is an eye opener for different reasons. The frailty and loneliness of old age hits home as he sees a side of life he's never experienced before. At Paramedic College Danielle and Reynir are feeling the pressure of their new career. They're learning how to get injured drivers out of car wrecks. Get it wrong and their patient could end up a paraplegic.I do not own this video. It is great to see Rebecca learn how to better deal with emotionally disturbed patients! Anyone that is able to admit to & learn from their mistakes is 100% trainable in EMS. Good job on this one! The assurance that paramedics are competent BEFORE certification is much, much, stricter in New South Wales, AUS, than in 90% of the places in the USA. Most "paramedic schools" are about $ money $ They want to show a high graduation rate. Many just teach "how to pass the National Registry exam"!

Hey there Doc I am a Paramedic in the southern USA. Here, our medical director, who is a trauma surgeon, authorizes us to preform advanced skills such as rapid sequence intubation using paralytics and proper analgesia using morphine or fentanyl. We are even allowed to do surgical trachs after completeing advanced trauma life support classes. I am always thrilled to learn about EMS services in other countries. Please share some of the standards of care in Germany with me.horrible job with all of the calls, taking your time on scene with the cardiac arrest, the 74 y/o f pt who fell w/ a open wound- why would you as a paramedic be concerned w/ the people calling, and the dog barking, and asking the relatives for ice?? cease all the distractions from the time you arrive on scene, fuck the ice its an open wound pouring blood out. this video really pisses me off, im glad i dont live/practice medicine in australia

Episode summary
Trainee Rebecca and her mentor Chris are closest to the scene when a call comes in to assist a 9 year-old girl with breathing difficulties. It's an emotionally charged scene as the girl's family are incredibly distraught. Bec needs to keep her cool.

On Sydney's outskirts 82 year old Bob has rolled his car several times. It's up to Evan, in the role of treating paramedic for the first time, to treat his serious injuries. It's a big responsibility and puts the young rookie to the test. And unusual scene John Williams the trainee, meets John Williams the patient. Will the real John Williams please stand up?

At Paramedic College trainees are nearing the end of their 8 weeks intensive theory and it's crunch time. Blake and Reynir must show their CPR skills in a simulated cardiac arrest scenario. The patient has stopped breathing. They'll need to show instructors they're ready to deal with real life heart attacks out on the road.

There are at least three levels I can think of off the top of my head. We've got the standard paramedic, intensive care paramedic and rescue (heli) paramedics. Standard paramedics do use endotracheal tubes and cannulation (haven't done osseous injections in my course yet so I'm not sure about that one.) but they just don't show it here. What's being shown are the most basic techniques and calls that the training paramedics get called to.

Episode summary
At Paramedic College a class of new recruits are nearing their final assessments but before they can begin their on-road training there's one more hurdle to jump. The tough 'major trauma' assessment. They'll be treating a simulated patient.

If Reynir and Blake fail this test, they could be out of a job.

Jenna's been out of college for eight weeks with mentor Cleone. Today she's called to her first pedestrian collision. A car has struck a teenage-boy and, with pedestrian deaths accounting for about 13% of all road fatalities, Jenna's patient is lucky to be alive - although it's the injuries Jenna can't see that have her worried. Compassion is perhaps the biggest pre-requisite to becoming a Paramedic and after two months as a trainee, Rebecca's had plenty of time to reflect on this very human quality. When her father was dying of cancer, it was the compassion shown to him by a nurse that made Rebecca change careers and become a Paramedic. Now the mother of three is called to a job close to her heart when a 67 year-old cancer patient is in great pain.

Re glove's. goodDrmmerman. If you watch over this clip you'll see that the paramedics are wearing their gloves & like someone else has stated, gloves aren't required all of the times. As an epileptic my paramedics at all times have worn gloves & have always disinfected their hands when finished. I know of this as I'm a frequent casualty who see's them bring inpatient's in.

Episode summary
Trainee Paramedics must pass eight weeks of intensive theory before they're allowed to start a 3-year mentorship on the road. For Blake, passing his final assessment is the only thing that stands between him and his dream job...

But a crucial error threatens to derail the promise of a new career. Having passed his final test Reynir finds himself on the road with six-year paramedic, Mel. It's a Saturday night, the full moon is out and a drug overdose is Reynir's first official job as a paramedic. It's an unpredictable and potentially explosive situation for the fresh-faced recruit. For rookie paramedics, dealing with situations on the street is very different to the classroom environment. Despite the best training possible, nothing can prepare them for the unforeseeable circumstances that confront them on a daily basis. As for young Blake, he manages to scrape through his final test at College but his real test now awaits him. Life on the road as a paramedic.

8 weeks pre-training before they start a 3 year mentorship after which they are then qualified. Australian paramedics undergo at least 3 years of intensive training, followed by one year as a trainee on the job. They can administer drugs only normally allowed to be administered by a physician. Australian paramedics are considered among the best trained in the world. The safest place in the world to have a heart attack is in the back of a Melbourne ambulance.

Saturday nights in Sydney are never quiet for a Paramedic. Trainee Rebecca and her mentor Chris are called to the aid of a young girl who is left collapsed and vulnerable on the side of a busy road. Her story rings alarm bells of a spiked drink.

As more and more people drive into the city to paint the town red, probationer John is called to a five-car pile up on a major highway. His thoughts drift back to his first motor vehicle accident when he wasn't so sure on his feet.

Technically you can, however you must be very careful to not cause them to gag/produce more emesis.  But in this case, personally, I wouldn't.  This woman was alert and with some assistance was able to clear her airway and maintain it's patency.  I would have to say, No, on the suctioning. This pt. has a productive cough, she's conscious, and has a patent airway. If she was vomiting and couldn't clear the emesis then we would need to think of suctioning!

Reynir has just finished eight weeks at Paramedic College and has just begun three years of on road training. It's his 2nd day with new mentor, veteran paramedic Mel and within minutes of starting his shift, Reynir is thrown into the deepest end possible.

In Sydney's Central Railway station a businessman is about to make a huge impact on the young trainee. As the man walks to a train, security cameras capture him collapsing to the ground -- he's had a heart attack. Minutes later a team of paramedics, including Reynir, rush to treat the man. It's Reynir's first cardiac arrest and the first time he has used a defibrillator in a real life situation. Only 3% of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside hospital survive. If the man does pull through he'll be one of the lucky few.

At the end of 3 months on-road training, it's time for Jenna, Evan, Rebecca and John to say goodbye to their first.

Well I'm never saying that not intubating is a problem. You follow ur protocols and that's fine. I would like to know who's allow to intubate in Australia.

For the chest compression, maybe the first one is okay but not the following. When you press down in the middle of the chest, it pushes the diaphragm down, thus expanding the abdomen. Here we don't see that happening, that's why I made that comment. Now the only way to measure it accurately would be to use a CPR-feedback device.
